Construction workers have long loved their step ladders. The move to podium steps hasn’t been welcomed with open arms. Why are so many large construction companies insisting on the use of podium steps? It really has to do with the HSE working at height regulations and there continuing amendments. The working at height regulations broadly covered “work in any place from which a person could fall a distance liable to cause an injury”. Those that controlled the work of others had to take “appropriate measures” to ensure the safety of those who were working at height. Podium steps became the equipment of choice to replace step ladders. Progressively access equipment with a safety handrail has been seen as the way forward. This includes scaffold towers, razordeck, and scissor lifts, safety steps, safety harnesses etc.
